Third Sunday in September: September 20, 2026: National Wife Appreciation Day: -- An annual celebration for spouses to show appreciation to their wives. Every day, spouses do things for each other, sometimes without thinking. Other times, work and responsibilities get in the way. This observance offers a way to remind husbands to show a little appreciation to their wives. This particular observance sets aside time for couples who have no children. Not every woman is a mother, either by chance or choice. Since so many holidays celebrate families with children, this day offers a day for those who remained childless. Couples may choose to celebrate the day traditionally with a gift of flowers, perfume, jewelry or clothing. However, other options include a day at a spa, tickets to a show or dinner at a nice restaurant. A foot massage and cooking breakfast or dinner at home can also say, "Thank you for all the things you do every day. I appreciate them." While research by NationalDayCalendar.com did not uncover the source of the day, they did identify the underlying meaning of Wife Appreciation Day. Even though it honored married women, the focus on honoring those who didn't have children. The day makes up for Mother's Day when there are no children in the marriage. #WifeAppreciationDay #NationalWifeAppreciationDay #MP4 #VideoDownload #DVD On Sale Until Midnight Tonight PT! https://store.earthstation1.com/classic-marital-guidance-marriage-counseling-films-dvd.html

September 20: National Pepperoni Pizza Day: -- An annual day of recognition of the most popular pizza ever created! While pizza comes with many different toppings, pepperoni is the single most popular pizza. Whether you like your pizza Chicago Style or New York Style, thin and crispy or deep dish, top it with pepperoni! According to legend, Raffaele Esposito created the first pizza in June of 1889. The Queen of Italy, Margherita of Savoy, inspired the pizza maker so much, he created the pie-shaped delicacy. In the queen's honor, he named it Pizza Margherita and topped the pizza with tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella. The colors represent the Italian flag. Since then, pizza has evolved. It includes a multitude of toppings from anchovies and pineapple to sausage and bacon. However, pepperoni remains the most popular. Italian-Americans developed the ever-popular topping through time-honored sausage-making techniques. Seasoned pork and beef sausage are smoked and cured. Once the product is ready to be sliced, it's placed on a delicious pie and baked. To observe National Pepperoni Pizza Day: Enjoy a slice of Pepperoni Pizza at your favorite pizzeria! September 20: National Punch Day: -- An annual celebration of the great thirst-quenching beverage! A wide assortment of drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, fall into the category of punch. A combination of fruit juice and a carbonated beverage, the colorful, bubbly drink sparkles with party personality. In fact, parties, weddings, and other celebrations serve punch as part of the centerpiece at the beverage table. Large wide bowls known as punch bowls provide a beautiful vessel for serving punch. In the early 17th century, punch made its appearance. It's believed sailors en route to England via India created the drink. Punch quickly grew in popularity and soon spread to other countries. The word punch is a loanword from Hindi panch (meaning five). Originally, punch was made with five ingredients: alcohol, sugar, lemon, water, and tea or spices. It was called paantsch. Soft drink manufacturers today distribute many types of "fruit punch" beverages. Most punch mixes are red in color. However, despite the name, they contain a small fraction of fruit juice. Sugar, corn syrup, citric acid, and artificial flavors make up the main ingredients. To observe National Punch Day: Make some punch and make a toast! Thousands of punch recipes make the beverage versatile and easy to make. Check recipe books and online. Be sure to share your favorites, too by using #NationalPunchDay to post on social media! September 20: National Crime And Intelligence Analyst Appreciation Day: -- A day that honors the work of crime and intelligence analysts in the U.S. - and it could not come at a better time. Here's why: according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are currently over three million federal, state, and local law enforcement officers working across the country. With so many people dedicated to protecting the country, it can be easy for analysts to feel overlooked. However, without the hard work of these analysts, police officers wouldn't be able to do their jobs as effectively - and this is especially true today. Crime analysts collect and analyze data from various sources and locations. It could include anything from police records to government statistics or even social media networks - whatever it takes to gain insight into criminal activity so those police departments can better understand what's going on in their communities. The information they uncover is used to help inform police officers about how they can most effectively fight crime, as well as inform citizens on how they can protect themselves against it. Identifying trends in criminal behavior helps law enforcement predict when and where crimes might occur, which allows them to allocate resources where they are needed. National Crime & Intelligence Analyst Appreciation Day was first recognized in 2021 by the Florida Crime & Intelligence Analyst Association (F.C.I.A.A.). It was formed in 1995 as a non-profit organization to foster the professional development of Intelligence Analysts and investigators. With over 200 members across the state, it has become a pillar in intelligence analysis, providing education, training opportunities, and networking events for analysts at every level. The F.C.I.A.A. began designing certification courses for law enforcement analysts in late 2019. These courses were designed to provide their members with the necessary training that will enhance their analytical skills and make them more competitive in their respective careers. The goal was to create an organization that would bring together police intelligence analysts, crime analysts, and other criminal justice professionals to network and share resources as well as provide continuing education. September 20, 1519: The Age Of Discovery (The Age Of Exploration): Circumnavigations: The Magellan Expedition (Armada De Molucca, Armada De Molucas, [Spanish: "The Molucca Navy"] (Fleet Of The Moluccas): -- Ferdinand Magellan sets sail from Sanlucar de Barrameda with the 270 men and five ships of The Armada De Molucca to find a western route to the Moluccas (Spice Islands). Three years later, on September 6, 1522, the Victoria, the only surviving ship of Ferdinand Magellan's expedition, returned to Sanlucar de Barrameda in Spain, becoming the first ship to circumnavigate the world, under the command of Juan Sebastian Elcano, who took command after Magellan's death in the Philippines. The fleet had sailed across the Atlantic ocean and down the eastern coast of South America, eventually discovering the Strait of Magellan, allowing them to pass through to the Pacific Ocean (which Magellan named). The fleet completed the first Pacific crossing, stopping in the Philippines, and eventually reached the Moluccas after two years. A much-depleted crew led by Elcano finally returned to Spain on 6 September 1522, having sailed west across the great Indian Ocean, then around the Cape of Good Hope through waters controlled by the Portuguese and north along the West African coast to eventually arrive in Spain. The Victoria (or Nao Victoria, as well as Vittoria) was a Spanish carrack or nao, as were all the other ships in the expedition (except Santiago, which was a caravel) that began on August 10, 1519 with five ships. However, Victoria was the only ship to complete the voyage. The four other ships were Trinidad (110 tons, crew 55), San Antonio (120 tons, crew 60), Concepcion (90 tons, crew 45), and Santiago (75 tons, crew 32). Trinidad, Magellan's flagship, Concepcion, and Santiago were wrecked or scuttled; San Antonio deserted the expedition during the navigation of the Straits of Magellan and returned to Europe on her own. Magellan did not complete the entire voyage because he was killed during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines in 1521. Victoria was built at a shipyard in Gipuzkoa, with the Basques being reputed shipbuilders at the time, and along with the four other ships, she was given to Magellan by King Charles I of Spain (The Holy Roman Emperor Charles V). Victoria was named after the church of Santa Maria de la Victoria de Triana, where Magellan took an oath of allegiance to Charles V. Victoria was an 85-ton ship with a crew of 42. Ferdinand Magellan was born into a Portuguese noble family in around 1480 (d. 27 April 1521). Magellan became a skilled sailor and naval officer and was eventually selected by King Charles I of Spain to search for a westward route to the Maluku Islands (the "Spice Islands"). Commanding a fleet of five vessels, he headed south through the Atlantic Ocean to Patagonia, passing through the Strait of Magellan into a body of water he named the "peaceful sea" (the modern Pacific Ocean). Despite a series of storms and mutinies, the expedition reached the Spice Islands in 1521 and returned home via the Indian Ocean to complete the first circuit of the globe. Magellan did not complete the entire voyage, as he was killed during the Battle of Mactan in the Philippines in 1521. His gift of the now widely venerated Santo Nino de Cebu statue to Rajah Humabon, the Rajah (ruler) of Cebu, now a province of the Philippines, remains one of his most enduring legacies. Magellan had already reached the Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asia on previous voyages traveling east (from 1505 to 1511-1512). By visiting this area again but now travelling west, Magellan achieved a nearly complete personal circumnavigation of the globe for the first time in history. The Magellanic penguin is named after him, as he was the first European to note it. Magellan's navigational skills have also been acknowledged in the naming of objects associated with the stars, including the Magellanic Clouds, now known to be two nearby dwarf galaxies; the twin lunar craters of Magelhaens and Magelhaens A; and the Martian crater of Magelhaens. September 20, 1890: #BOTD: #HBD! Jelly Roll Morton, African American jazz pioneer, pianist, composer, and bandleader (Red Hot Peppers and New Orleans Rhythm Kings) (d. July 10, 1941) is #born Ferdinand Joseph LaMothe into the Creole community in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans around 1890; he claimed to have been born in 1885. Both parents traced their Creole ancestry four generations to the 18th century. Morton's birth date and year of birth are uncertain, given that no birth certificate was ever issued for him. The law requiring birth certificates for citizens was not enforced until 1914. His parents were Edward Joseph (Martin) Lamothe, a bricklayer and occasional trombonist, and Louise Hermance Monette, a domestic worker. His father left his mother when Morton was three (they were never married). When his mother married William Mouton in 1894, Ferdinand adopted his stepfather's surname, anglicizing it to Morton. Jelly Roll Morton started his career in New Orleans, Louisiana. Widely recognized as a pivotal figure in early jazz, Morton is perhaps most notable as jazz's first arranger, proving that a genre rooted in improvisation could retain its essential spirit and characteristics when notated. His composition "Jelly Roll Blues", published in 1915, was the first published jazz composition. Morton also wrote the standards "King Porter Stomp", "Wolverine Blues", "Black Bottom Stomp", and "I Thought I Heard Buddy Bolden Say", the last a tribute to New Orleans musicians from the turn of the 20th century. Morton' claim to have invented jazz in 1902 aroused resentment. The jazz historian, musician, and composer Gunther Schuller says of Morton' "hyperbolic assertions" that there is "no proof to the contrary" and that Morton's "considerable accomplishments in themselves provide reasonable substantiation". Jelly Roll Morton died aged 50 after an eleven-day stay in Los Angeles County General Hospital of respiratory illness stemming from a 1938 stabbing by a friend of the owner of The Music Box (called, at various times, The Music Box, The Blue Moon Inn, and The Jungle Inn), a bar Morton managed and played piano in, in the African American neighborhood of Shaw, Washington, D.C.. Morton suffered wounds to the head and chest in the attack. A nearby whites-only hospital refused to treat him, as the city had racially segregated facilities. He was transported to a black hospital farther away. When he was in the hospital, doctors left ice on his wounds for several hours before attending to the injury. His recovery from his wounds was incomplete, and thereafter he was often ill and became short of breath easily. After this incident, his wife Mabel demanded they leave Washington. Worsening asthma sent him to a hospital in New York for three months. He continued to suffer from respiratory problems when he travelled to Los Angeles with the intent to restart his career, where he died. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery in East Los Angeles, California. During the abduction, Betty Hill claims to have been shown a three-dimensional star map that she drew after the event; according to some researchers and a computer analysis, that map appears to depict the Zeta Reticuli star system, which the alien that showed Hill the map told her was where they came from. Their story was adapted into the best-selling 1966 book The Interrupted Journey and the 1975 television film The UFO Incident. Most of Betty Hill's notes, tapes, and other items have been placed in the permanent collection at the University of New Hampshire, her alma mater. September 20, 1962: Civil Rights Movements: The American Civil Rights Movement (1954-1968): Anti-Black Racism In The United States: School Segregation: School Segregation In The United States: The Ole Miss Riot Of 1962 (September 30 - October 1, 1962) (The Battle Of Oxford): -- James Meredith, an African American, is temporarily barred from entering the University of Mississippi. Meredith won a lawsuit that allowed him admission to The University of Mississippi in September 1962. He attempted to enter campus on September 20, September 25, and again on September 26, only to be blocked by Mississippi Governor Ross R. Barnett, who proclaimed that "...No school in our state will be integrated while I am your Governor. I shall do everything in my power to prevent integration in our schools." After the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit held both Barnett and Lieutenant Governor Paul B. Johnson, Jr. in contempt with fines of more than 10K USD for each day they refused to allow Meredith to enroll, Meredith, escorted by a force of U.S. Marshals, entered the campus on September 30, 1962. Two people were killed by gunfire during the riot, a French journalist, Paul Guihard and an Oxford repairman, Ray Gunter. One-third of the US Marshals, 166 men, were injured, as were 40 soldiers and National Guardsmen. After control was re-established by federal forces, Meredith, thanks to the protection afforded by federal marshals, was able to enroll and attend his first class on October 1. Following the riot, elements of an Army National Guard division were stationed in Oxford to prevent future similar violence. While most Ole Miss students did not riot prior to his official enrollment in the university, many harassed Meredith during his first two semesters on campus. According to first person accounts, students living in Meredith' dorm bounced basketballs on the floor just above his room through all hours of the night. When Meredith walked into the cafeteria for meals, the students eating would all turn their backs. If Meredith sat at a table with other students, all of whom were white, the students would immediately get up and go to another table. September 20, 1973: Sports: The History Of Sports: The History Of Sports In The United States: Tennis: The History Of Tennis: The Feminist Movement (The Women's Movement, The Women's Rights Movement): The Battle Of The Sexes: Riggs vs. King: -- Billie Jean King beats Bobby Riggs in the Battle of the Sexes tennis match at the Houston Astrodome. Having been in the national limelight following his win over Margaret Court at the May 13, 1973 Mother's Day match in Ramona, California, Riggs taunted all female tennis players, prompting King to accept a lucrative financial offer to play Riggs in a nationally televised match in prime time on ABC that the promoters dubbed "The Battle Of The Sexes". The match, which had a winner-takes-all prize of 100K USD (659K as of 2023), was held in Texas at the Houston Astrodome on a Thursday. Then 29-year-old King had earned her fifth year-end ranking as World No. 1 female player the previous year, and would finish second to Court in 1973. ing entered the court in the style of Cleopatra, on a feather-adorned litter carried by four bare-chested muscle men dressed in the style of ancient slaves. Riggs followed in a rickshaw drawn by a bevy of models. Riggs presented King with a giant Sugar Daddy lollipop, and she responded by giving him a squealing piglet, symbolic of male chauvinism. Riggs was given 50K USD (330K as of 2023) to wear a yellow Sugar Daddy jacket during the match, which he took off after three games. Riggs also placed many bets on and invested a lot of money in the match. King, who also competed in the Virginia Slims of Houston tournament during the same week, won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. In the first set, she fell behind 3-2 when Riggs broke her serve. In a 2015 interview, she said that most people do not remember that she was initially behind in the first set, and it looked bad for her in the early going. At this point, King realized that she "had to win" given the importance of the match, and broke right back and again in the tenth game to close out the set. She had learned from Court's loss and was ready for Riggs's game. Rather than playing her own usual aggressive game, King mostly stayed at the baseline, at least at first, easily handling Riggs's lobs and soft shots, making him cover the entire court as she ran him from side to side and beat him at his own defensive style of play. After quickly failing from the baseline, where he had intended to play, Riggs dropped his comedic effect and showed a more serious demeanor, as he was forced to change to a serve-and-volley game, but he was no match for King. Some male critics were less impressed by King's victory, pointing to the fact that she was 26 years younger. Jack Kramer, who was against equal pay for women and offered a tournament in which the female winner got 1,500 USD while the male winner got 12,000 USD, was one example. According to him, "I don't think Billie Jean played all that well. She hit a lot of short balls which Bobby could have taken advantage of had he been in shape. I would never take anything away from Billie Jean-because she was smart enough to prepare herself properly-but it might have been different if Riggs hadn't kept running around. It was more than one woman who took care of Bobby Riggs in Houston." But before the match, King had forced the American television network ABC to drop Kramer as a commentator. King said, "He doesn't believe in women's tennis. Why should he be part of this match? He doesn't believe in half of the match. I'm not playing. Either he goes -- or I go." More neutral observers were impressed by King's brilliant play and smart tactics: "She both first-served aggressively and attacked Riggs' own softball deliveries with authority. She rushed to the net and commanded the territory by whipping stunning volleys off her backhand and by taking Riggs' infamous moon-shot lobs out of the Dome lights and rifling overheads right back past him. She varied pace on ground strokes, kept Riggs moving from corner to corner and played consistently to his weak backhand. She concentrated on hitting behind her opponent, wrong-footing him time and time again, then surprising him with some of his own beloved spin garbage. Everything worked... it was a brilliant rising to an occasion; a clutch performance under the most trying of circumstances. Seldom has there been a more classic example of a skilled athlete performing at peak efficiency in the most important moment of her life." Feminist media critic Susan Douglas later wrote "women like me screamed with delight in our living rooms, she not only vindicated female athletes and feminism but also inspired many of us to get in shape-not because it would make us beautiful but because it would make us strong and healthy". The match had an audience of an estimated 50 million in the U.S. and 90 million worldwide. The attendance in the Houston Astrodome was 30,472; as of 2012, it remains the largest audience to see a tennis match in the United States. September 20, 2001: The War On Terror (The Global War On Terrorism [GWOT]): The September 11 Attacks (9/11): -- In the aftermath of The September 11 Attacks, U.S. President George W. Bush declares a "War On Terror" during an address to a joint session of Congress and the American people. The War On Terror, officially the Global War On Terrorism (GWOT), is a global counterterrorism military campaign initiated by the United States following the September 11 attacks and is also the most recent global conflict spanning multiple wars. The War On Terror began when The Authorization For Use Of Military Force Against Terrorists (AUMF) was made law on September 14, 2001, which authorized the use of United States Armed Forces against those responsible for the September 11 attacks. It authorized the President to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons, to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations or individuals. Ultimately, the main targets of the war became militant Islamist and Salafi jihadist armed organisations such as al-Qaeda, the Islamic State, and their international affiliates, which were waging military insurgencies to overthrow governments of various Muslim-majority countries. Other major targets included the Ba'athist regime in Iraq, which was deposed in an invasion in 2003, and various militant factions that fought during the ensuing insurgency. The "War On Terror" uses war as a metaphor to describe a variety of actions which fall outside the traditional definition of war. 43rd President of the United States George W. Bush first used the term "War On Terrorism" on 16 September 2001, and then "War On Terror" a few days later in a formal speech to Congress. Bush indicated the enemy of the War On Terror as "a radical network of terrorists and every government that supports them." The initial conflict was aimed at al-Qaeda, with the main theater in Afghanistan and Pakistan, a region that would later be referred to as "AfPak". The term "War On Terror" was immediately criticized by individuals including Richard Myers, then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Of Staff, and eventually more nuanced terms came to be used by the Bush administration to define the campaign. While "War On Terror" was never used as a formal designation of U.S. operations, a Global War On Terrorism Service Medal was and is issued by the U.S. Armed Forces. With the major wars over and only low-level combat operations in some places, the end of The War in Afghanistan (2001-2021) on August 30, 2021 symbolizes the visible ending of the war, or at least its main phase, for many in the West. On August 30, 2021, the United States completed the hasty withdrawal of its military from Afghanistan. The withdrawal was heavily criticized both domestically and abroad for being chaotic and haphazard, as well as for lending more momentum to the Taliban offensive. However, many European countries followed suit, including Britain, Germany, Italy, and Poland. Despite evacuating over 120,000 people, the large-scale evacuation has also been criticized for leaving behind hundreds of American citizens, residents, and family members. The U.S. military ceased awarding the National Defense Service Medal for the Global War On Terrorism on December 31, 2022. As of 2023, various operations in the campaign are ongoing, including an ongoing counter-insurgency campaign in Somalia. According to the Costs of War Project, the post-9/11 wars of the campaign have displaced 38 million people, the second largest number of forced displacements of any conflict since 1900, and caused at least 4.5 million deaths (direct and indirect) in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Philippines, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. They also estimate that it has cost over 8T USD for the US Treasury. Controversy over the war has focused on its morality, casualties and continuity; with critics questioning government measures to infringe civil liberties and human rights. Controversial practices of Coalition military forces have been condemned; including drone warfare, surveillance, torture, extraordinary rendition and various war-crimes. The participating governments have been criticized for implementing authoritarian measures, repressing minorities, for fomenting Islamophobia globally, and for causing negative impacts to health and environment. Security analysts assert that there is no military solution to the conflict, pointing out that terrorism is not an identifiable enemy, and have emphasized the importance of negotiations and political solutions to resolve the underlying roots of the crises. September 20, 1872: #BOTD: Maurice Gamelin, senior French Army general, best known for his unsuccessful command (until May 17, 1940) of the French military during The Battle Of France (May 10 - June 22, 1940) in World War II and his steadfast defence of the republican model of government at a time when Communists on the left and Royalists and Fascists on the right were openly advocating regime change in France (d. April 18, 1958) is #born Maurice Gustave Gamelin in Paris, France. From an early age Gamelin showed potential as a soldier, growing up in a generation seeking revenge on Germany for the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine at the end of the Franco-Prussian War. As Commander-In-Chief of the French Armed Forces at the start of World War II, Gamelin was viewed as a man with significant intellectual ability. He was respected, even in Germany, for his intelligence and "subtle mind", though he was viewed by some German generals as stiff and predictable. Despite this, and his competent service in World War I, his command of the French armies during the critical days of May 1940 proved to be disastrous. Historian and journalist William L. Shirer presented the view that Gamelin used World War I methods to fight World War II, but with less vigor and slower response. Gamelin served with distinction under Joseph Joffre in World War I. He is often credited with being responsible for devising the outline of the French counter-attack in 1914 which led to victory during the First Battle of the Marne. In 1933 Gamelin rose to command the French Army and oversaw a modernisation and mechanisation programme, including the completion of the Maginot Line defences. Edouard Daladier supported Gamelin throughout his career, owing to Gamelin's refusal to allow politics to play a part in military planning and promotion, and his commitment to republican values. After the Fall of France, Gamelin was succeeded as General d'armee by Maxime Weygand, a post he had held immediately before Gamelin. The Vichy regime tried Gamelin for treason along with other important political and military figures of the Third Republic (Edouard Daladier, Guy La Chambre, Leon Blum, and Robert Jacomet) in The Riom Trial. Gamelin refused to answer the charges against him, instead maintaining silence, and the entire proceeding collapsed. Imprisoned by the Vichy regime in Fort du Portalet in the Pyrenees, he was later deported by the Germans to the Itter Castle in North Tyrol with a few other French high officials. He was freed from the castle after the Battle for Castle Itter. After the war, he published his memoirs, titled Servir (meaning "to serve"). Gamelin died in Paris, France of natural causesat the age of 85. He is buried at The Cimetiere de Passy in Paris. Today, September 20, 2026

September 20, 1881: U.S. President Chester A. Arthur is sworn in, the morning after becoming President upon James A. Garfield' death. Chester A. Arthur, American politician who served as the 21st president of the United States from 1881 to 1885, Republican lawyer from New York who previously served as the 20th vice president under President James A. Garfield (October 5, 1829 - November 18, 1886) was born Chester Alan Arthur in Fairfield, Vermont, grew up in upstate New York and practiced law in New York City. He served as quartermaster general of the New York Militia during the American Civil War. Following the war, he devoted more time to New York Republican politics and quickly rose in Senator Roscoe Conkling's political organization. President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him as Collector of the Port of New York in 1871, and he was an important supporter of Conkling and the Stalwart faction of the Republican Party. In 1878, following bitter disputes between Conkling and President Rutherford B. Hayes over control of patronage in New York, Hayes fired Arthur as part of a plan to reform the federal patronage system. In June 1880, the extended contest between Grant, identified with the Stalwarts, and James G. Blaine, the candidate of the Half-Breed faction, led to the compromise selection of Ohio's Garfield for president. Republicans then nominated Arthur for vice president to balance the ticket geographically and to placate Stalwarts disappointed by Grant's defeat. Garfield and Arthur won the 1880 presidential election and took office in March 1881. Four months into his term, Garfield was shot by an assassin; he died 11 weeks later on September 19, 1881, and Arthur assumed the presidency, serving the remainder of his term until March 4, 1885. As president, Arthur presided over the rebirth of the US Navy, but he was criticized for failing to alleviate the federal budget surplus which had been accumulating since the end of the Civil War. Arthur vetoed the first version of the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, arguing that its twenty-year ban on Chinese immigrants to the United States violated the Burlingame Treaty, but he signed a second version, which included a ten-year ban. He appointed Horace Gray and Samuel Blatchford to the Supreme Court. He also enforced the Immigration Act of 1882 to impose more restrictions on immigrants and the Tariff of 1883 to attempt to reduce tariffs. Arthur signed into law the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act of 1883, which came as a surprise to reformers who held a negative reputation of Arthur as a Stalwart and product of Conkling's organization. Suffering from poor health, Arthur made only a limited effort to secure the Republican Party's nomination in 1884, and he retired at the end of his term. Arthur's failing health and political temperament combined to make his administration less active than a modern presidency, yet he earned praise among contemporaries for his solid performance in office. Journalist Alexander McClure wrote, "No man ever entered the Presidency so profoundly and widely distrusted as Chester Alan Arthur, and no one ever retired ... more generally respected, alike by political friend and foe." Chester A. Arthur died of a cerebral hemorrage at his home in New York City aged 57, two days after he fell seriously ill and ordered nearly all of his papers, both personal and official, to be burned. On November 22, a private funeral was held at the Church of the Heavenly Rest in New York City, attended by President Cleveland and ex-President Hayes, among other notables. Arthur was buried with his family members and ancestors in the Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands, New York. He was laid beside his wife in a sarcophagus on a large corner of the plot. In 1889, a monument was placed on Arthur's burial plot by sculptor Ephraim Keyser of New York, consisting of a giant bronze female angel figure placing a bronze palm leaf on a granite sarcophagus. The New York World summed up Arthur's presidency at his death in 1886: "No duty was neglected in his administration, and no adventurous project alarmed the nation." Mark Twain wrote of him, "It would be hard indeed to better President Arthur's administration." Arthur's post-presidency, some 19 months long, was the second-shortest of all presidents who lived past their presidencies, after that of James K. Polk who died just three months after leaving office. Evaluations by modern historians generally rank Arthur as a mediocre or average president. Arthur has also been described as one of the least memorable presidents. A monument was erected in 1932 in front of Porta Pia to commemorate the event at the same time as the National Museum of the Bersaglieri corps was moved to Porta Pia, where it resides still today. So ended the Papal States, which had existed since 756 AD, as well the temporal power of the Holy See, and led to the establishment of Rome as the capital of unified Italy. September 18-20, The American Civil War (The Civil War, The War Between The States): The Western Theater Of The American Civil War: The Chickamauga Campaign: The Battle Of Chickamauga: -- September 20: The third and final day of the three day engagement occurs in northwestern Georgia, the bloodiest two-day battle of the conflict, and the only significant Confederate victory in the war's Western Theater. The Battle Of Chickamauga, fought on September 18 - 20, 1863, between U.S. and Confederate forces in the American Civil War, marked the end of a Union offensive in southeastern Tennessee and northwestern Georgia - the Chickamauga Campaign. It was the first major battle of the war fought in Georgia, the most significant Union defeat in the Western Theater, and involved the second-highest number of casualties after the Battle Of Gettysburg. The battle was fought between the Army of the Cumberland under Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans and the Confederate Army of Tennessee under Gen. Braxton Bragg, and was named for Chickamauga Creek, which meanders near the battle area in northwest Georgia (and ultimately flows into the Tennessee River about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) northeast of downtown Chattanooga). After his successful Tullahoma Campaign, Rosecrans renewed the offensive, aiming to force the Confederates out of Chattanooga. In early September, Rosecrans consolidated his forces scattered in Tennessee and Georgia and forced Bragg's army out of Chattanooga, heading south. The Union troops followed it and brushed with it at Davis's Cross Roads. Bragg was determined to reoccupy Chattanooga and decided to meet a part of Rosecrans's army, defeat it, and then move back into the city. On September 17 he headed north, intending to attack the isolated XXI Corps. As Bragg marched north on September 18, his cavalry and infantry fought with Union cavalry and mounted infantry, which were armed with Spencer repeating rifles. Fighting began in earnest on the morning of September 19. Bragg's men strongly assaulted but could not break the Union line. The next day, Bragg resumed his assault. In late morning, Rosecrans was misinformed that he had a gap in his line. In moving units to shore up the supposed gap, Rosecrans accidentally created an actual gap, directly in the path of an eight-brigade assault on a narrow front by Confederate Lt. Gen. James Longstreet, whose corps had been detached from The Army Of Northern Virginia. In the resulting rout, Longstreet's attack drove one-third of the Union army, including Rosecrans himself, from the field. Union units spontaneously rallied to create a defensive line on Horseshoe Ridge ("Snodgrass Hill"), forming a new right wing for the line of Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas, who assumed overall command of remaining forces. Although the Confederates launched costly and determined assaults, Thomas and his men held until twilight. Union forces then retired to Chattanooga while the Confederates occupied the surrounding heights, besieging the city. September 20, 1911: #BOTD: #HBD! Frank De Vol, American composer, arranger, actor, comedian and record producer (d. October 27, 1999) is #born Frank Denny De Vol in Moundsville in Marshall County in northern West Virginia. As a composer and aranger, he used the name De Vol. As a composer he was nominated for four Academy Awards. De Vol began composing music when he was 12. When he was 14, he became a member of the Musicians' Union. After playing violin in his father's orchestra and appearances in a Chinese restaurant, he joined the Horace Heidt Orchestra in the 1930s, being responsible for the arrangements. Later, he toured with the Alvino Rey Orchestra, before embarking on his recording career. By the time De Vol was 16, he was doing arrangements with professional skill. From the 1940s, De Vol wrote arrangements for the studio recordings of many top singers, including Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Dinah Shore, Doris Day, Vic Damone and Jaye P. Morgan. His single most famous arrangement is probably the haunting string and piano accompaniment to Cole's "Nature Boy", which was a United States Number One in 1948. That same year, he released a version of "The Teddy Bears' Picnic" (Capitol Records 15420), that he arranged and sang lead vocals on. In 1966-1967, he arranged the soundtrack for the 1967 Columbia Pictures comedy film The Happening starring Anthony Quinn and co-produced The Supremes recording of the theme from the film with Motown producers Holland-Dozier-Holland which became a #1 American pop hit later that year. The success of "Nature Boy", recorded for Capitol Records, led to an executive position for De Vol at the rival Columbia Records. There, he recorded a series of orchestral mood music albums under the studio name "Music by De Vol" (which he also used for some of his film and TV work). The 1959 album Bacchanal! (The Passions and Pageantry of Gods and Goddesses of Mythology) is an acclaimed example of De Vol's mood music; each track is by English composer Albert Harris and is named after a god or goddess of Greek mythology. In the 1950s, De Vol's orchestra played frequently at the Hollywood Palladium under the concert name "Music of the Century". De Vol wrote the scores for many Hollywood movies, receiving Academy Award nominations for four of them: Pillow Talk (1959), Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964), Cat Ballou (1965) and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967). De Vol's numerous scores included Kiss Me Deadly (1955), What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), McLintock! (1963), The Flight of the Phoenix (1965), The Glass Bottom Boat (1966), The Dirty Dozen (1967), Hustle (1975), Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo (1977) and Herbie Goes Bananas (1980). He also scored many Doris Day comedies and films for director Robert Aldrich. De Vol also composed the jingle for the Screen Gems' "Dancing Sticks" logo (1963-1965), which appeared on all television series produced by the television division of Columbia Pictures. De Vol was musical director (and occasionally seen) on Edgar Bergen's CBS Television prime-time game show Do You Trust Your Wife? (1956-1957). "Frank De Vol's orchestra" was featured on the NBC Television prime-time musical variety series The Lux Show Starring Rosemary Clooney (1957-1958). During this time, he appeared on The Betty White Show (1954) and Rod Cameron's syndicated State Trooper. In 1964 he was seen in an episode during the first season of, My Favorite Martian and several guest spots on different television shows throughout the 1960s. In the 1970s, he appeared as the ironically named dour bandleader Happy Kyne on the talk show satire/parody Fernwood 2 Night (1977) and America 2-Night (1978). De Vol is best recognized for his television theme tunes, like Family Affair, The Brady Bunch and My Three Sons. The My Three Sons theme was musically complex, with a marimba playing a triplet obligato (the famous tune "Chopsticks") over the melody in 4/4 time, and was a hit single in 1961. He composed scores for episodes of McCloud and The Love Boat, amongst other work for television. Beginning in 1969, "The Fuzz" became the theme song of Brazilian television newscast Jornal Nacional. De Vol was also an actor specializing in deadpan comic characters, especially as the dour bandleader Happy Kyne on the talk show parodies Fernwood 2 Night and America 2-Night, in 1977-78. He also had a recurring role in I'm Dickens, He's Fenster, as Myron Bannister, Dickens & Fenster's boss; as well as appearances on The Cara Williams Show, I Dream of Jeannie, Gidget, Bonanza, Petticoat Junction - (1967 episode: "That Was the Night That Was" & 1969 episode: "The Organ Fund" - as Reverend Barton), Mickey starring Mickey Rooney, The Brady Bunch, Get Smart (at least 2 appearances as Professor Carleton) and The Jeffersons. De Vol had also comic roles as Chief Eaglewood, the head of the Thundercloud Boys' Camp in 1961's The Parent Trap, and as the onscreen narrator in Jerry Lewis's 1967 comedy film The Big Mouth. De Vol also appeared as a bandleader in the last season of My Three Sons, in addition to writing the theme music and serving as in-house composer for most of the show's twelve seasons. He also scored most episodes of Family Affair, including many of the same incidental music cues as My Three Sons. In 1980, he appeared in the second season of Diff'rent Strokes, episode 22 called, "The Slumber Party". De Vol preferred to be credited as "Frank De Vol" for his acting appearances, and as "De Vol" for his musical work. De Vol was initiated as an honorary member of the Gamma Omega chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the national fraternity for men in music, in 1962. In the mid 1990s, when well into his eighties, De Vol was active in the Big Band Academy of America. De Vol was married twice. His first marriage was to Grayce Agnes McGinty in 1935. This 54-year marriage produced two daughters, Linda Morehouse and Donna Copeland, and ended with Grayce's death in 1989. His second marriage was to television actress and big band singer Helen O'Connell from 1991 until her death in 1993. De Vol died of congestive heart failure on October 27, 1999, in Lafayette, California. He is interred at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Hollywood Hills. September 20, 1925: Aesthetics: Performing Arts: Premieres: Film Premieres: American Film Premieres: -- The Freshman, an American silent comedy film that tells the story of a college freshman trying to become popular by joining the school football team, is released to theaters. It stars Harold Lloyd, Jobyna Ralston, Brooks Benedict, and James Anderson. It remains one of Lloyd's most successful and enduring films. The film was written by John Grey, Sam Taylor, Tim Whelan, and Ted Wilde. It was directed by Taylor and Fred C. Newmeyer. In 1990, The Freshman was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant", added in the second year of voting and one of the first 50 films to receive the honor. The Freshman is widely considered one of Lloyd's most hilarious, well-constructed films and was his most successful silent film of the 1920s. Hugely popular at the time of its release, it sparked a craze for college films that lasted well beyond the 1920s. It was one of Lloyd's few films to remain widely available after the sound era, and he reissued the film (with cuts) and used extended scenes in compilation films of the 1960s. The football game sequence was reused by Lloyd and director Preston Sturges in Lloyd's last film, The Sin of Harold Diddlebock (1947). American humorist and author H. C. Witwer sued Lloyd in April 1929 for 2.3M USD over The Freshman, claiming that it was "pirated" from Witwer's short story "The Emancipation of Rodney", first published in 1915. When Witwer died from liver failure in Los Angeles, on August 9, 1929, the lawsuit had not been settled. Witwer's widow pursued the lawsuit and won a judgment against Lloyd in November 1930. On appeal, the United States Court of Appeals overturned the ruling and Witwer's widow received nothing. A further lawsuit was brought in 2000 by Lloyd's granddaughter, Suzanne Lloyd Hayes, against the Walt Disney Company, alleging that elements of The Freshman were copied to the 1998 comedy The Waterboy; the US District Court in Los Angeles eventually ruled against Hayes. September 20, 1878: #BOTD: #HBD! Upton Sinclair, American novelist, critic, muckraker, essayist, political activist, 1934 Democratic Party nominee for governor of California, and Pulitzer Prize For Fiction recipient who wrote nearly 100 books and other works in several genres (d. November 25, 1968) is #born Upton Beall Sinclair in Baltimore, Maryland. Sinclair wrote nearly 100 books and other works in several genres. Sinclair's work was well known and popular in the first half of the 20th century, and he won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1943. In 1906, Sinclair acquired particular fame for his classic muck-raking novel The Jungle, which exposed labor and sanitary conditions in the U.S. meatpacking industry, causing a public uproar that contributed in part to the passage a few months later of the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act. In 1919, he published The Brass Check, a muck-raking expose of American journalism that publicized the issue of yellow journalism and the limitations of the "free press" in the United States. Four years after publication of The Brass Check, the first code of ethics for journalists was created, known as the Fourth Estate's Journalism Code of Practice (Accuracy, Independence, Impartiality, Integrity, Harm Minimization, Engagement, Accountability) authored by The Fourth Estate Public Benefit Corporation (also referred to as Fourth Estate), an international, non-partisan, human rights, membership organization dedicated to a strong free press. Time magazine called Sinclair "a man with every gift except humor and silence". He is also well remembered for the line: "It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it." He used this line in speeches and the book about his campaign for governor as a way to explain why the editors and publishers of the major newspapers in California would not treat seriously his proposals for old age pensions and other progressive reforms. Many of his novels can be read as historical works. Writing during the Progressive Era, Sinclair describes the world of industrialized America from both the working man's and the industrialist's points of view. Novels such as King Coal (1917), The Coal War (published posthumously), Oil! (1927), and The Flivver King (1937) describe the working conditions of the coal, oil, and auto industries at the time. The Flivver King describes the rise of Henry Ford, his "wage reform" and his company's Sociological Department, to his decline into antisemitism as publisher of The Dearborn Independent. Sinclair was an outspoken socialist and ran unsuccessfully for Congress as a nominee from the Socialist Party. He was also the Democratic Party candidate for Governor of California during the Great Depression, running under the banner of the End Poverty in California campaign, but was defeated in the 1934 elections. Upton Sinclair died in a nursing home in Bound Brook, New Jersey, aged 89. He is buried in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C., next to his third wife Mary Willis. Harrison worked at WCFL as a summer replacement, yet remained there eight months, substituting for the permanent DJs. Harrison became program director at WPEO, Peoria and hosted the morning show as the "Morning Mayor of Peoria." In just six months, Harrison made WPEO the top station. In 1959, Harrison joined WMCA, New York, as the mid-day "Good Guy." Joe O'Brien (mornings) and Harrison gave WMCA a "one-two punch" for over eight years. Harrison, along with wife Patti, and children Brian Joseph ["B.J."], Patti, Patrick, and Michael called the New York suburbs "home". In 1965, he recorded the nationally charted holiday narration "May You Always" on Amy Records. Other WMCA "Good Guys" included Jack Spector, B. Mitchel Reed, Dan Daniel and Johnny Dark, and talk show host Barry Gray. Harrison became popular with his "Housewife Hall of Fame" feature, and participated in the 1966 WMCA Good Guy picnic. Often, he scored the highest ratings on WMCA. WABC program director Rick Sklar took note. In 1968, when WABC morning man Herb Oscar Anderson left the station, Rick Sklar hired Harrison to replace him. Harrison was followed in the WABC day by Ron Lundy. Every year, Harrison played seasonal songs, such as his holiday greeting "May You Always" in the winter (the Amy records single of this song made the Billboard Christmas charts in 1965), and Allan Sherman's summer camp novelty, "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh", throughout the summer months. WABC personalities included, along with Harrison, Charlie Greer, Scott Muni, Bob Lewis, Lundy, Johnny Donovan, Dan Ingram, "Cousin Brucie" Bruce Morrow, Chuck Leonard, Bob Cruz, Frank Kingston Smith, and Roby Yonge, and others. Harrison had a number of "trademark" phrases, such as "Morning, Mom", "Every brand new day should be unwrapped like a precious gift", "Stay well, stay happy, stay right here" and "Harry Harrison wishing you all the very best... because that's exactly what you deserve!" Also, on the last day of every year, Harrison would bring his four children to work with him and at the end of his shift, he would join them in giving listeners New Year's wishes. Harrison was let go from WABC as the station changed direction in November 1979. In March 1980, Harrison became the morning personality at WCBS-FM (101.1), playing oldies music. In 1984, with Lundy joining the station, they were once again heard back-to-back. Harrison would interact with Morning Crew engineer Al Vertucci, Phil Pepe, who reported sports, and joke about "wacky weather" and toupee warnings with Irv "Mr. "G" Gikofsky (weather), Mary Jane Royce, and Sue Evans. At 7:20 AM, Harrison opened the "birthday book" and announced listener and celebrity birthdays. On April 25, 1997 New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani issued a proclamation, naming April 25 "Harry Harrison Day" in honor of the second "Mayor." On March 19, 2003, after a 44-year career in New York radio, Harrison left WCBS-FM, saying "I am not retiring." His farewell to his loyal radio friends (from 5:30 to 10:00am) was held before a live audience at the Museum of Television and Radio in New York City. It offered old airchecks plus guest appearances by WCBS-FM colleagues Don K. Reed, Bobby Jay, Steve O'Brien, Randy Davis and Dan Taylor, his replacement, as well as his son and daughter, and wife Patti. Harrison took phone calls from Bob Shannon, Mike Fitzgerald, Ed Baer, and Ron Lundy. Songs included Gladys Knight's "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)" and the Little River Band's "Reminiscing," before closing with "That's What Friends Are For." Shortly after he left WCBS-FM, Harrison's long-time wife, Patti, who he had always referred to as "Pretty Patti" on the air, died. Harrison returned to WCBS-FM with a Saturday morning show in 2004. It offered two hours of variety and two hours of Beatles music and memories. On Memorial Day, May 30, 2005, Harry and "Cousin" Bruce Morrow were guests on WABC Radio's annual Rewound show. Four days later, on June 3, WCBS-FM ended its "oldies" format, in favor of the new "Jack" format. However, as a result of listener disapproval, the WCBS-FM Oldies format was brought back on July 12, 2007, in a modernized form. Harry Harrison died peacefully at his home in Westwood, New Jersey, at the age of 89. He is buried at Rockland Cemetery in Sparkill, Rockland County, New York. Charles Duryea claimed that on April 19, 1892 he and his brother, Frank, produced and road-tested America's first gasoline-powered car. Frank claimed that in fact occurred it on September 20, 1893, and suggested that the April 19, 1892 date was chosen by Charles Duryea to spite his brother Frank, with whom he entered into a business rivalry. Other sources claim that on September 21, 1893 they performed road-test the first-ever, working American gasoline-powered automobile on the Howard Bemis farm in Chicopee, Massachusetts. The Duryea's "motor wagon" was a used horse drawn buggy that the brothers had purchased for 70 USD and into which they had installed a 4 HP, single cylinder gasoline engine. The car (buggy) had a friction transmission, spray carburetor and low tension ignition. Frank Duryea test drove it again on November 10, this time in a prominent location: past their garage at 47 Taylor Street in Springfield. The next day it was reported by The Republican newspaper with great fanfare. This particular car was put into storage in 1894 and stayed there until 1920, when it was rescued by a former Duryea engineer Inglis M. Uppercu and presented to the United States National Museum. Paterson again lost by a technical knockout; this time the fight was stopped in the 7th round. The defeat proved to be the last fight for Patterson, aged 37, although there was never an announcement of retirement. Muhammad Ali vs. Floyd Patterson refers to two heavyweight professional boxing matches. The first match took place on November 22, 1965, for the WBC/Ring/lineal world heavyweight championship; and the second on September 20, 1972 at Madison Square Garden for the regional North American Boxing Federation (NABF) heavyweight title. Ali won both fights through technical knockouts. The first fight was stopped in the 12th round; and the second after the 7th round. The first first fight, Patterson went into the fight with an optimistic view. Instead of scoring a quick knockout, Ali mocked, humiliated and punished Patterson throughout, before the referee stopped the fight in the 12th round. A New York Times reporter complained that the fight was like watching someone "pulling the wings off a butterfly." September 20, 1989: South Africa: The History Of South Africa: Segregation: Racial Segregation: Apartheid (Racial Segregation In South Africa): Elections And Referendums In South Africa: The 1989 South African General Eelection: -- After the last Prime Minister of South Africa, P. W. Botha, resigned on August 14, and F.W. de Klerk was named acting state president until September 20, de Klerk was elected and sworn in to a full five-year term as state president of South Africa. After he became acting president, ANC leaders spoke out against him, believing that he would be no different from his predecessors; he was widely regarded as a staunch supporter of apartheid. When the prominent anti-apartheid activist clergymen Desmond Tutu and Allan Boesak planned and organized a protest march in Cape Town, De Klerk nevertheless turned down his security chiefs' proposal to ban it, stating that "the door to a new South Africa is open, it is not necessary to batter it down". The march took place and was attended by approximately 30,000 people. Further protest marches followed in Grahamstown, Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Durban. Meanwhile, de Klerk authorized the continuation of secret talks in Geneva between his National Intelligence Service and two exiled ANC leaders, Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma. In October, he personally agreed to meet with Tutu, Boesak, and Frank Chikane in a private meeting in Pretoria. That month, he also released a number of elderly anti-apartheid activists then imprisoned, including Walter Sisulu. He also ordered the closure of the National Security Management System. In December he visited Mandela in prison, speaking with him for three hours about the idea of transitioning away from white-minority rule. On 2 February 1990 he gave an address to the country's parliament in which he announced plans for sweeping reforms of the political system. He announced that a number of banned political parties, including the ANC and Communist Party of South Africa, would be legalised, although stipulated that this did not constitute an endorsement of their socialist economic policies nor of violent actions carried out by their members.] He also announced that the Separate Amenities Act of 1953, which governed the segregation of public facilities, would be lifted. His speech revealed that all of those who were imprisoned solely for belonging to a banned organisation would be freed. He declared that Mandela would be released from prison unconditionally; the latter was released a week later. The vision set forth in de Klerk's address was for South Africa to become a Western-style liberal democracy; it envisioned a market-oriented economy which privileged private enterprise and restricted the government's role in economics. De Klerk later related that "that speech was mainly aimed at breaking our stalemate in Africa and the West. Internationally we were teetering on the edge of the abyss." Throughout South Africa and across the world, there was astonishment at de Klerk's move. Foreign press coverage was largely positive and de Klerk received messages of support from other governments. Tutu said that "It's incredible... Give him credit. Give him credit, I do." Some black radicals regarded it as a gimmick and that it would prove to be without substance. It was also received negatively by some on the white right-wing, including in the Conservative Party, who believed that de Klerk was betraying the white population. De Klerk believed that the sudden growth of the Conservatives and other white right-wing groups was a passing phase reflecting anxiety and insecurity. These white right-wing groups were aware that they would not get what they wanted through the forthcoming negotiations, and so increasingly tried to derail the negotiations using revolutionary violence. The white-dominated liberal Democratic Party found itself in limbo, as de Klerk embraced much of the platform it had espoused, leaving it without a clear purpose. Further reforms followed; membership of the National Party was opened up to non-whites. In June, parliament approved new legislation that repealed the Natives Land Act, 1913 and Native Trust and Land Act, 1936. The Population Registration Act, which established the racial classificatory guidelines for South Africa, was rescinded. In legislative terms, he enabled the gradual end of apartheid. De Klerk also opened the way for the negotiations of the government with the anti-apartheid-opposition about a new constitution for the country. His presidency was dominated by the negotiation process, mainly between his NP government and the ANC, which led to the democratization of South Africa. In 1992, de Klerk held a whites-only referendum on ending apartheid, with the result being an overwhelming "yes" vote to continue negotiations to end apartheid. Nelson Mandela was distrustful of the role played by de Klerk in the negotiations, particularly as he believed that de Klerk was knowledgeable about 'third force' attempts to foment violence in the country and destabilize the negotiations. In 1990, de Klerk gave orders to end South Africa's nuclear weapons programme; the process of nuclear disarmament was essentially completed in 1991. The existence of the programme was not officially acknowledged before 1993. In 1993, de Klerk and Mandela were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work in ending apartheid. The awarding of the prize to de Klerk was controversial, especially in the light of de Klerk's reported admission that he ordered a massacre of supposed Azanian Peoples' Liberation Army fighters, including teenagers, shortly before going to Oslo in 1993. It appears that this massacre may form part of the basis for criminal charges that the Anti-Racism Action Forum laid against de Klerk in early 2016. Further, de Klerk's role in the destabilization of the country during the negotiation process through the operation of a 'third force' came to the attention of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and was never ultimately clarified. After the first universal elections in 1994, de Klerk became deputy president in the government of national unity under Nelson Mandela, a post he kept until 1996. In 1997 he resigned the leadership of the National Party and retired from politics. In 1993, de Klerk issued an apology for the actions of the apartheid government, stating that: "It was not our intention to deprive people of their rights and to cause misery, but eventually apartheid led to just that. Insofar as that occurred we deeply regret it... Yes we are sorry". Tutu urged for people to accept the apology, stating that "saying sorry is not an easy thing to do... We should be magnanimous and accept it as a magnanimous act", although Tutu was privately frustrated that de Klerk's apology had been qualified and had not gone so far as to call apartheid an intrinsically evil policy. Citizens who were able to pay the ransom were set free, however several thousand were enslaved. The Kingdom of Jerusalem, weakened by internal disputes, was defeated two months prior at the Battle of Hattin on July 4, 1187. Most of the nobility were taken prisoner, including King Guy. Thousands of Muslim slaves were freed. By mid-September, Saladin had taken Acre, Nablus, Jaffa, Toron, Sidon, Beirut, and Ascalon. Though Jerusalem fell, it was not the end of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, as the capital shifted first to Tyre, the only city able to hold out against Saladin due to the fortuitous arrival of Conrad of Montferrat and where survivors of the battle and other refugees fled, and later to Acre after the Third Crusade. Latin Christians responded in 1189 by launching the Third Crusade led by Richard The Lionheart, Philip Augustus, and Frederick Barbarossa separately. September 20, 1984: The Aftermath Of World War II: The Cold War: The Arab Cold War: The Arab-Israeli Conflict: The Iran-Israel Proxy Conflict (The Iran-Israel Proxy War: The Iran-Israel Cold War): The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: The Lebanese Civil War: The 1984 United States Embassy Annex Bombing In Beirut: -- The Shi'a Islamic militant group Islamic Jihad Organization (IJO), a precursor of the Shia Islamist political party and militant group Hezbollah, carries out a suicide car bombing targeting the U.S. embassy annex in East Beirut, Lebanon, with support and direction from the Islamic Republic of Iran who actually planned, organized and executed the plot. The attack killed 24 people. Hezbollah had also used suicide car or truck bombs in the April 1983 U.S. embassy bombing and the 1983 Beirut barracks bombings. In July 1984, the U.S. had relocated its embassy operations from West Beirut to the relative security of Aukar, a Christian suburb of East Beirut. When on September 20, 1984, the attacker sped his van laden with 3,000 pounds (1360 kg) of explosives toward the six-story embassy, crucial security measures had not yet been completed at the complex, including a massive steel gate. The van was heading for the entrance of the diplomatic facility, but did not get within ten yards of the building after the driver was shot by a bodyguard of the British ambassador and Lebanese embassy guards and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle detonated at 11:44 a.m. after striking a parked van. The explosion "ripped off the front of the embassy, shredding glass, bending steel bars and destroying cars in a nearby parking lot." The attack killed a total of 24 people (including the suicide bomber). Only two of the dead were American: Chief Warrant Officer Kenneth V. Welch of the U.S. Army and Petty Officer 1st Class Michael Ray Wagner of the U.S. Navy, who were both assigned to the U.S. Defense Attache Office in Beirut. The majority of those killed were Lebanese, "either local employees or people seeking visas". Of the injured, the U.S. Ambassador, Reginald Bartholomew, was slightly hurt, as well as the British Ambassador, David Miers, who was meeting with Bartholomew at the time of explosion. The Islamic Jihad Organization (IJO) claimed responsibility for the attack in a telephone call a few hours after the explosion. The caller said, "The operation goes to prove that we will carry out our previous promise not to allow a single American to remain on Lebanese soil." The U.S. government understood that Hezbollah had carried out the attack under the cover name of IJO with the support of Iran. Through satellite reconnaissance, U.S. intelligence discovered that a mock-up of the annex had been created at the Iranian Revolutionary Guard-run Sheikh Abdullah barracks in Baalbek to practice for the attack. Under the amended Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, victims of the bombing and their families have filed cases against the Islamic Republic of Iran, holding it responsible for its role in the attack and demanding compensation. These legal cases are: 1) Estate of Doe, et al. v Republic of Iran, et al. (2013) - 58 foreign national employees and one American employee that were killed or injured in the 1983 embassy bombing and 1984 embassy annex bombing are awarded 8.4B USD. The judge ruled "that the attacks were carried out by the terrorist group Islamic Jihad, known most commonly as Hezbollah, operating with Iranian support and encouragement."; and 3) Brewer v. Islamic Republic of Iran (2009) - Security guard Richard Brewer and his family are awarded 310M USD in damages. Brewer was injured in the bombing. The judge ruled "Hezbollah received substantial funds and support from Iran via its Ministry of Information and Security and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. This court concludes that defendants provided 'material support and resources' to Hezbollah." The Lebanese Civil War (Arabic: Al-Harb al-Ahliyyah al-Libnaniyyah) was a multifaceted civil war in Lebanon, lasting from 1975 to 1990 and resulting in an estimated 120,000 fatalities. As of 2012, approximately 76,000 people remain displaced within Lebanon. There was also an exodus of almost one million people from Lebanon as a result of the war. Before the war, Lebanon was multi-sectarian, with Sunni Muslims and Christians being the majorities in the coastal cities, Shia Muslims being mainly based in the south and the Beqaa Valley to the east, and with the mountain populations being mostly Druze and Christian. The government of Lebanon had been run under a significant influence of the elites among the Maronite Christians. The link between politics and religion had been reinforced under the mandate of the French colonial powers from 1920 to 1943, and the parliamentary structure favored a leading position for its Christian population. However, the country had a large Muslim population and many pan-Arabist and left-wing groups opposed the pro-western government. The establishment of the state of Israel and the displacement of a hundred thousand Palestinian refugees to Lebanon during the 1948 and 1967 exoduses contributed to shifting the demographic balance in favor of the Muslim population. The Cold War had a powerful disintegrative effect on Lebanon, which was closely linked to the polarization that preceded the 1958 political crisis, since Maronites sided with the West while leftist and pan-Arab groups sided with Soviet-aligned Arab countries. Fighting between Maronite and Palestinian forces (mainly from the Palestine Liberation Organization) began in 1975, then Leftist, pan-Arabist and Muslim Lebanese groups formed an alliance with the Palestinians.[11] During the course of the fighting, alliances shifted rapidly and unpredictably. Furthermore, foreign powers, such as Israel and Syria, became involved in the war and fought alongside different factions. Peacekeeping forces, such as the Multinational Force in Lebanon and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, were also stationed in Lebanon. September 20, 1934: #BOTD: #HBD! Sophia Loren, Italian actress, sex symbol and beauty, is #born Sofia Villani Scicolone in the Clinica Regina Margherita in Rome, Italy, the daughter of Romilda Villani (1910-1991) and Riccardo Scicolone, a construction engineer of noble descent (Loren wrote in her autobiography that she is entitled to call herself the Marchioness of Licata Scicolone Murillo). Sofia Villani Scicolone Dame Grand Cross OMRI was one of the most recognisable stars of classic Hollywood. She was named by the American Film Institute as the 21st greatest female star of Classic Hollywood Cinema. She is currently the only living actress and the highest ranked living person on the list. Encouraged to enroll in acting lessons after entering a beauty pageant, Loren began her film career at age 16 in 1950. She appeared in several bit parts and minor roles in the early part of the decade, until her five-picture contract with Paramount in 1956 launched her international career. Notable film appearances around this time include The Pride and the Passion, Houseboat, and It Started in Naples. Loren's performance as Cesira in the movie Two Women (1961) directed by Vittorio De Sica earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress, making her the first actor or actress to win an Oscar for a foreign-language performance. She holds the record for having earned six David di Donatello Awards for Best Actress: Two Women; Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963); Marriage Italian Style (1964) (for which she was nominated for a second Oscar); Sunflower (1970); The Voyage (1974); and A Special Day (1977). After starting a family in the early 1970s, Loren chose to make rarer film appearances. Most recently, she has appeared in American films such as Grumpier Old Men (1995) and Nine (2009). She has also won a Grammy Award, five special Golden Globes (including the Cecil B. DeMille Award), a BAFTA Award, a Laurel Award, the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival and the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1991, she received the Academy Honorary Award for lifetime achievements, one of many such awards. A black and white photo of Sophia Loren was modeled to appear prominently on the cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band, but in the final shoot, only a small portion of her right cheek is visible between the waxworks John Lennon's right shoulder and the waxwork's George Harrison's left cheek; she has been cited as having been exluded from the cover, but as part of her visage is visible, we therefore cite her as de facto appearing on the cover. Today, September 20, 2026
September 20, 1993: #DOTD: #RIP: Erich Hartmann, nicknamed "The Black Devil" (German: "Der Schwarze Teufel", Russian: "Cherniy Chort"), also nicknamed "Bubi" (ironically, in light of his having been an airmen for Nazi Germany, because "Bubi" is both a Yidddish and a German word, meaning "Little One", "Beloved Child" or simply "The Kid"), German fighter pilot during World War II and the most successful fighter ace in the history of aerial warfare (b. April 19, 1922) #dies of natural causes at the age of 71 in Weil im Schonbuch, Germany. He is buried New Cemetery, Weil im Schonbuch. In 2016, Hartmann's former German Air Force unit, JG 71, honoured him by applying his tulip colour scheme to their aircraft. Erich Hartmann was given the nickname The Black Devil because of his skill (the Soviet Command had put a price of 10,000 rubles on his head) and the paint scheme of his aircraft, in the shape of a black tulip laying on its side with the bottom of the bulb flush with the engine cowling and its petals extending along the sides in a triangular formation (though this became synonymous with Hartmann, in reality he flew with the insignia on only five or six occasions). Erich Hartmann was bprm Erich Alfred Hartmann in Weissach, Wurttemberg, Weimar Republic, Germany. Erich Hartmann flew 1,404 combat missions and participated in aerial combat on 825 separate occasions. He was credited with shooting down 352 Allied aircraft - 350 Soviet and two American - while serving as a Luftwaffe fighter pilot, most often in the Messerschmidt Bf 109. During the course of his career, Hartmann was forced to crash-land his fighter 16 times due to either damage received from parts of enemy aircraft he had just shot down or mechanical failure. Hartmann, a pre-war glider pilot, joined the Luftwaffe in 1940 and completed his fighter pilot training in 1942. He was posted to the veteran Jagdgeschwader 52 (JG 52) on the Eastern Front and was fortunate to be placed under the supervision of some of the Luftwaffe's most experienced fighter pilots. Under their guidance, Hartmann steadily developed his tactics. On 29 October 1943 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for 148 enemy aircraft destroyed and the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross for 202 enemy aircraft on 2 March 1944, followed by the Swords to the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves exactly four months later for 268 enemy aircraft shot down. Ultimately, Hartmann earned the coveted Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds on 25 August 1944 for claiming 301 aerial victories. At the time of its presentation to Hartmann, this was Germany's highest military decoration. Hartmann achieved his 352nd and last aerial victory at midday on 8 May 1945, hours before the German surrender. Along with the remainder of JG 52, he surrendered to United States Army forces and was turned over to the Red Army. In an attempt to pressure him into service with the Soviet-friendly East German National People's Army, he was tried on war crimes charges and convicted. He was initially sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment, later increased to 25 years, and spent 10 years in various Soviet prison camps and gulags until he was released in 1955. In 1997, the Russian Federation (posthumously) relieved him of all charges. In 1956, Hartmann joined the newly established West German Air Force in the Bundeswehr, and became the first Geschwaderkommodore of Jagdgeschwader 71 "Richthofen". He was retired in 1970, due to his opposition to the procurement of the F-104 Starfighter. In his later years, after his military career had ended, he became a civilian flight instructor. https://store.earthstation1.com/props-and-jets-fighter-aces-of-world-war-ii-dvd-mp4-us4.html

September 20, 1947: #DOTD: #RIP: Fiorello La Guardia American lawyer and propressive politician, liberal member of the Republican Party, 99th Mayor of New York City for three terms from 1934 to 1945 as a Republican (b. December 11, 1882) #dies of pancreatic cancer in his home at 5020 Goodridge Avenue, in the Fieldston neighbourhood of Riverdale, Bronx, aged 64. La Guardia is interred at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx in a simple grave that reads "La Guardia. Statesman | Humanitarian". Fiorello H. La Guardia was born Fiorello Raffaele Enrico La Guardia in Greenwich Village, New York City to Achille Luigi Carlo La Guardia and Irene Luzzatto-Coen. He was named in honor of his maternal grandmother, paternal grandfather, and uncle. Fiorello's father Achille was born in Foggia, Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, on March 26, 1849, and his father, Don Raffaele La Guardia, was a municipal official. Achille visited the United States in 1878, while on tour with Adelina Patti, an Italian opera singer, earning huge fees at the height of her career in the music capitals of Europe and America in the 19th century. Fiorello's mother Irene was a member of the Sephardic Jewish Luzzatto family, and was born in Trieste, Austria, on July 18, 1859. Fiorello's parents married on June 3, 1880, after having known each other for only half a year. Achille, a former Catholic, was an atheist, and Irene was a nonpracticing Jew. Achille prohibited his children from speaking Italian; Fiorello would not become proficient in Italian until his time as a consular agent, and would regularly give political speeches in a mix of American English, Italian and Yiddish. Fiorello Henry La Guardia had been elected to Congress in 1916 and 1918, and again from 1922 through 1930. Irascible, energetic, and charismatic, he craved publicity and is acclaimed as one of the greatest mayors in American history. Only five feet, two inches (1.57 m) tall, he was called "the Little Flower" (Fiorello is Italian for "little flower"). La Guardia, a Republican who appealed across party lines, was very popular in New York during the 1930s. As a New Dealer, he supported President Franklin D. Roosevelt, a Democrat, and in turn Roosevelt heavily funded the city and cut off patronage for La Guardia' enemies. La Guardia revitalized New York City and restored public faith in City Hall. He unified the transit system, directed the building of low-cost public housing, public playgrounds, and parks, constructed airports, reorganized the police force, defeated the powerful Tammany Hall political machine, and reestablished employment on merit in place of patronage jobs. La Guardia was a domineering leader who verged on authoritarian but whose reform politics were carefully tailored to address the sentiments of his diverse constituency. He defeated a corrupt Democratic machine, presided during a depression and a world war, made the city the model for New Deal welfare and public works programs, and championed immigrants and ethnic minorities. He succeeded with the support of a sympathetic president. He secured his place in history as a tough-minded reform mayor who helped clean out corruption, brought in gifted experts, and fixed upon the city a broad sense of responsibility for its own citizens. His administration engaged new groups that had been kept out of the political system, gave New York its modern infrastructure, and raised expectations of new levels of urban possibility. https://store.earthstation1.com/fiorello-laguardia-dvd-biography-documentary.html

September 20, 2000: #DOTD: #RIP: Gherman Titov, Russian general, pilot, and cosmonaut, who aboard Vostok 2 on August 6, 1961 became the second known human to orbit the Earth, the fourth known person in space counting the suborbital voyages of US astronauts Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom (b. September 11, 1935) #dies of cardiac arrest in his sauna at the age of 65 in Moscow, Russia. He is buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow. Gherman Titov was born Gherman Stepanovich Titov in the village of Verkhneye Zhilino in the Altai Krai, a federal subject of Russia (krai). Titov's flight finally proved that humans could live and work in space. He was the first person to orbit the Earth multiple times (a total of 17), to spend more than a day in space, to sleep in orbit and to suffer from space sickness. In fact, he also holds the record for being the first person to vomit in space. He was the first to pilot a spaceship personally and he made the first manual photographs from orbit, thus setting a record for modern space photography. A month short of 26 years old at launch, he remains the youngest person to fly in space. In his subsequent life Titov continued to work for the Soviet space program, playing a major role in the Spiral project where he trained to become the first pilot of an orbital spaceplane. However, after the death of Yuri Gagarin in a military aircraft accident in 1968 the Soviet government decided it couldn't afford to lose its second cosmonaut, and so Titov's career as test pilot ended. Titov served in the Soviet Air Force and become a colonel-general, and in his final years in post-Soviet Russia he became a Communist politician. Despite having been chosen only second after Gagarin to fly into space, it was Titov who later proposed the Soviet Government regularly celebrate Cosmonautics Day on April 12, the day of Gagarin's flight. https://store.earthstation1.com/russian-right-stuff-dvd-set-space-program-secret-history-2-disc2.html

September 20, 1973: #DOTD: #RIP: Jim Croce, American folk and rock singer, songwriter and guitarist (b. January 10, 1943) #dies at the height of his popularity, along with his songwriter and guitarist partner Maury Muehleisen and all five others on their chartered Beechcraft E18S light aircraft, when it crashes into a tree on takeoff at Natchitoches Regional Airport in Louisiana. That Thursday crash occurred during Croce's Life and Times tour and the day before his ABC single "I Got a Name" was released. Others killed in the crash were pilot Robert N. Elliott, Maury Muehleisen, comedian George Stevens, manager and booking agent Kenneth D. Cortese and road manager Dennis Rast. An hour before the crash, Croce had completed a concert at Northwestern State University's Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches; he was flying to Sherman, Texas, for a concert at Austin College. An investigation by the NTSB named the probable cause as the pilot's failure to see the obstruction due to physical impairment and because fog reduced his vision. The 57-year-old Elliott suffered from severe coronary artery disease and had run three miles to the airport from a motel. He had an ATP certificate, 14,290 hours total flight time and 2,190 hours in the Beech 18 type airplane. A later investigation placed the sole blame on pilot error due to his downwind takeoff into a "black hole" of severe darkness, limiting his use of visual references. Croce was buried at Haym Salomon Memorial Park in Frazer, Pennsylvania. Jim Croce was born James Joseph Croce in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to James Albert Croce and Flora Mary (Babusci) Croce, both Italian Americans from Trasacco and Balsorano in Abruzzo and Palermo in Sicily. Jim Croce released five studio albums and numerous singles. His first two albums were commercially unsuccessful, failing to chart or produce any hit singles. During this period, Croce took a series of odd jobs to pay bills while he continued to write, record, and perform concerts. After forming a partnership with songwriter and guitarist Maury Muehleisen his fortunes turned in the early 1970s. His breakthrough came in 1972; his third album You Don't Mess Around with Jim produced three charting singles, including "Time in a Bottle", which reached No. 1 after his death. The follow-up album, Life and Times, contained the song "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown", which was the only No. 1 hit he had during his lifetime. Croce's music continued to chart throughout the 1970s following his death. His wife, Ingrid Croce, was his early songwriting partner and she continued to write and record after his death, and his son A. J. Croce himself became a singer-songwriter in the 1990s. https://store.earthstation1.com/dj-radio-airchecks-mp3-dvd-1950s60s70s-dis319506070.html

Today, September 20, 2026
September 20, 2005: #DOTD: #RIP: Simon Wiesenthal, Jewish Austrian Holocaust survivor, Nazi hunter and writer (b. December 31, 1908) #dies in his sleep at age 96 in Vienna. He was buried in the city of Herzliya in Israel. Simon Wiesenthal KBE (Knight Commander Of The Most Excellent Order Of The British Empire) was born in Buczacz, Kingdom Of Galicia And Lodomeria, Austria-Hungary (modern Buchach, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine). He studied architecture and was living in Lwow at the outbreak of World War II. He survived the Janowska concentration camp (late 1941 to September 1944), the Krakow-Plaszow concentration camp (September to October 1944), the Gross-Rosen concentration camp, a death march to Chemnitz, Buchenwald, and the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp (February to 5 May 1945). After the war, Wiesenthal dedicated his life to tracking down and gathering information on fugitive Nazi war criminals so that they could be brought to trial. In 1947, he co-founded the Jewish Historical Documentation Centre in Linz, Austria, where he and others gathered information for future war crime trials and aided refugees in their search for lost relatives. He opened the Documentation Centre of the Association of Jewish Victims of the Nazi Regime in Vienna in 1961 and continued to try to locate missing Nazi war criminals. He played a small role in locating Adolf Eichmann, who was captured in Buenos Aires in 1960, and worked closely with the Austrian justice ministry to prepare a dossier on Franz Stangl, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1971. In the 1970s and 1980s, Wiesenthal was involved in two high-profile events involving Austrian politicians. Shortly after Bruno Kreisky was inaugurated as Austrian chancellor in April 1970, Wiesenthal pointed out to the press that four of his new cabinet appointees had been members of the Nazi Party. Kreisky, angry, called Wiesenthal a "Jewish fascist", likened his organisation to the Mafia, and accused him of collaborating with the Nazis. Wiesenthal successfully sued for libel, the suit ending in 1989. In 1986, Wiesenthal was involved in the case of Kurt Waldheim, whose service in the Wehrmacht and probable knowledge of the Holocaust were revealed in the lead-up to the 1986 Austrian presidential elections. Wiesenthal, embarrassed that he had previously cleared Waldheim of any wrongdoing, suffered much negative publicity as a result of this event. With a reputation as a storyteller, Wiesenthal was the author of several memoirs containing tales that are only loosely based on actual events. In particular, he exaggerated his role in the capture of Eichmann in 1960. Wiesenthal died in his sleep at age 96 in Vienna and was buried in the city of Herzliya in Israel. The Simon Wiesenthal Center, headquartered in Los Angeles, is named in his honor. https://store.earthstation1.com/murderers-among-us-the-simon-wiesenthal-story-dvd-2-disc-se2.html

September 20, 1933: #DOTD: #RIP: Annie Besant, freemason, theosophist, fabian, occultist, women's rights activist, social activist, political activist, union activist, socialist, writer, orator, educationist, and philanthropist (b. October 1, 1847) #dies at age 85 in Adyar, Madras Presidency, British India. Her body was cremated, the ashes were scattered both on the river Ganges and in The Garden Of Remeberance at Adyar. After her death, colleagues Jiddu Krishnamurti, Aldous Huxley, Guido Ferrando, and Rosalind Rajagopal, built the Happy Valley School in California, now renamed the Besant Hill School Of Happy Valley in her honour. Born Annie Wood in Clapham, London, England, she is regarded as a champion of human freedom, an ardent supporter of both Irish and Indian self-rule. She was a prolific author with over three hundred books and pamphlets to her credit. As an educationist, her contributions included being one of the founders of the Banaras Hindu University. In 1867, Annie, at age 20, married Frank Besant, a clergyman, and they had two children. However, Annie's increasingly unconventional religious views led to their legal separation in 1873. She then became a prominent speaker for the National Secular Society (NSS), as well as a writer, and a close friend of Charles Bradlaugh, English political activist and atheist who founded the National Secular Society in 1866. In 1877 they were prosecuted for publishing a book by birth control campaigner Charles Knowlton, The Fruits of Philosophy, or the Private Companion of Young Married People, which contained a summary of what was then known about the physiology of conception, listed a number of methods to treat infertility and impotence, and explained a method of birth control Knowlton had developed to wash out the vagina after intercourse with certain chemical solutions. The scandal made them famous, and Bradlaugh was subsequently elected M.P. for Northampton in 1880. Thereafter, she became involved with union actions, including the Bloody Sunday demonstration and the London matchgirls strike of 1888. She was a leading speaker for both the Fabian Society and the Marxist Social Democratic Federation (SDF). She was also elected to the London School Board for Tower Hamlets, topping the poll, even though few women were qualified to vote at that time. In 1890 Besant met Helena Blavatsky, and over the next few years her interest in theosophy grew, whilst her interest in secular matters waned. She became a member of the Theosophical Society and a prominent lecturer on the subject. As part of her theosophy-related work, she travelled to India. In 1898 she helped establish the Central Hindu School, and in 1922 she helped establish the Hyderabad (Sind) National Collegiate Board in Mumbai, India. In 1902, she established the first overseas Lodge of the International Order of Co-Freemasonry, Le Droit Humain. Over the next few years she established lodges in many parts of the British Empire. In 1907 she became president of the Theosophical Society, whose international headquarters were, by then, located in Adyar, Madras, (Chennai). She also became involved in politics in India, joining the Indian National Congress. When World War I broke out in 1914, she helped launch the Home Rule League to campaign for democracy in India, and dominion status within the British Empire. This led to her election as president of the Indian National Congress party in late 1917. In the late 1920s, Besant travelled to the United States with her protege and adopted son Jiddu Krishnamurti, who she claimed was the new Messiah and incarnation of Buddha. Krishnamurti rejected these claims in 1929. After the war, she continued to campaign for Indian independence and for the causes of theosophy, until her death in 1933. https://store.earthstation1.com/the-historical-view-a-legacy-in-pictures-jpg-photo-cd.html
